This year your child will participate in a literacy block. This block of instruction will include Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Spelling. We will be reading about writing and writing about what we read. All the while making sure we pay close attention to the rules of grammar and spelling learned thus far; and, also, building on the foundation which has already been laid. We have a rather extensive classroom library, which students are encouraged to use, as well as our school and community libraries. Required homework each night will be reading for a period of 20 minutes. The writing homework will be assigned weekly based upon what we are talking about in class and how it relates to what they are reading. Most of the time students will have free choice of their reading material; however, on occasion I will require them to read either a fiction, or non-fiction piece in order to connect the material to what we are learning in class.
The structure of our reading class will be based upon The Daily 5 reading program produced by The Two Sisters. Our classroom has an open-door policy and if ever you would like to join us for our Literacy Block, please feel free.
