Math

This year we will begin implementation of the Common Core State Standards as adopted by the Tennessee Department of Education. The way Math will be taught in our classroom may look much different from the way you were taught as a student. The homework will be a little different and the tests or assessments will also be somewhat nontraditional. In order for you to best understand what we will be doing you may want to take a look at the link below. It is about a 10 minute video produced by the state which explains in a little more depth what common core is. My plan at this point is to present students with a task (formerly known as a word problem) on day 1. Then based upon their responses to the task, our instruction on days 2, 3 & 4 will be based upon students thought processes of the tasks. Then on day 5 students will be presented with another task which will look much like the first one, and a score will be taken on that for their grade. If students are still struggling with facts, they will need to be working on those in the evenings and perhaps with a classroom assistant during the day. Our focus will be on Math concepts with a greater emphasis placed upon fractions than other aspects. I will post more information on this page as we proceed through our first year of these changes together. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this endeavor.
